The name Steinbeis has stood for efficient knowledge transfer for over 150 years. For an active interlocking of theory and practice. For long-term success. As the founder of numerous trade schools in Württemberg, Ferdinand von Steinbeis laid the foundation for dual training. He was regarded as a promoter of innovative ideas. A pioneer of practical educational concepts.

The first Steinbeis Foundation for the promotion of industrial training for young talent was established in his name as early as 1868. 115 years later, the foundation is being revived. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Johann Löhn contributes his expertise as the government commissioner for technology transfer at the time and redesigns the foundation. By establishing the first transfer centers, he has a lasting impact on the Steinbeis concept and leads it to its current form.

Steinbeis University is founded in 1998. Dr. Walter Beck and Rainer Gehrung were instrumental in establishing the university and developing the PKS. The first project competence course “Master of Business and Engineering (MBE)” was launched at Steinbeis University.

In 2015, the Steinbeis School of Management and Technology (SMT) was founded as a business school at Steinbeis University, which continues to teach career-integrated degree programs based on the proven principle of Project Competence Studies®. SMT cooperates closely with the Steinbeis Center of Management and Technology (SCMT), the largest project house in the Steinbeis network and its partner companies. SMT is responsible for the study program, while SCMT is responsible for project identification and retention.

All degree programs offered by SMT are Steinbeis University degree programs and are based on its framework and examination regulations. As the operational unit/business school of the Department of Technology and Engineering, SMT administers the studies, teaching and research of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs based there. In addition, the SMT is organizationally responsible for interdepartmental degree courses in the field of Information Systems and Industrial Engineering. Our management not only acts as the administrative head of the School of Technology and Engineering, but is also an elected representative on the Faculty Council and the Academic Senate of Steinbeis University.
